Birth Planning Consultations for Trauma Survivors

Labor and birth can be both an incredible and deeply vulnerable experience. Planning for birth often brings up a wide range of emotions—excitement, fear, joy, and uncertainty. For individuals who have experienced trauma (such as birth trauma, sexual assault, or interpersonal violence), the process of giving birth can be especially triggering, sometimes resurfacing past memories and emotions.

Preparing for potential triggers that may arise during the birth process can help individuals feel more grounded, empowered, and calm as they approach this life-changing event. When a parent feels empowered throughout pregnancy and birth, they are more likely to bond with their baby, experience fewer perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and enter parenthood with greater confidence and resilience. For trauma survivors, cultivating this sense of empowerment can also support meaningful healing from past wounds.
The Birth Planning Consultation for Survivors is informed by the training of Selena Shelley and modeled after the work of Penny Simkin, PT, and Phyllis Klaus, LMFT, co-authors of When Survivors Give Birth. This consultation is designed to support trauma survivors in preparing for pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Together, we will gently reflect on past experiences—without any need to revisit specific details of trauma—and focus on identifying what you need to feel safe, supported, and empowered moving forward. Drawing on my clinical background as a psychotherapist, along with specialized training in trauma and recovery, I aim to create a space where this healing work can unfold.

As a general guideline, our work together may include:
-
Discussing common perinatal triggers, as outlined in When Survivors Give Birth
-
Identifying which triggers feel most relevant or anxiety-provoking for you
-
Developing personalized coping strategies to support you during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum
While childbirth can sometimes reawaken past trauma, increased awareness and preparation can significantly reduce the likelihood and intensity of these experiences. With the right tools and support, it is possible not only to navigate birth more comfortably, but also to foster healing and step into parenthood with a renewed sense of self.
